Lambton Family Initiative

LAMBTON FAMILY INITIATIVE is a support service for family members, significant others and concerned friends of individuals with any form of mental illness.  It is a place to receive information, support and understanding in a confidential atmosphere.  Anyone can use the service; no referral is necessary.  When mental illness strikes, it often causes feelings of guilt or shame within the family.  It is often not recognized as a treatable illness.  Mental illness is a biochemical imbalance.  Mental illness is a stigma in today’s society.  We have to recognize it as a treatable brain disorder, similar to any physical illness or disability. There are misconceptions about mental illness.  For example, it is commonly believed that mentally ill people are violent, when in fact, only three to five percent of all those who suffer with mental illness fit into this category.  Another is that mental illness prevents someone from leading a normal life, whereas recovery and reintegration is very possible with support and knowledge from family members and caregivers, and the new medications available.

Lambton Family Initiative, in    addition to providing education and support, also advocates on behalf of the family members, and helps them understand their rights and that of their family member under the Mental Health Act.

Lambton Family Initiative is funded by the Provincial Government through the Community Investment Fund, and services are provided free of charge.
