PREVENTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM (PEP)
Presentations delivered through our Preventive Education Program are designed to enhance the public’s general understanding of mental illness, to reduce the stigma that is so often associated, and to promote emotional wellness in our schools, workplaces, and the community as a whole. Some are offered on a fee-for-service basis.

Mental Illness Awareness
Mental Illness Awareness Presentations provide an overview of serious mental illness including detailed discussion of Mood Disorders (Depression, Bipolar Disorder, etc.), Anxiety Disorders (Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, etc.), and Psychotic Disorders (First Episode Psychosis, Schizophrenia, etc.). Symptoms and treatment options are described and discussed, and available community resources are highlighted.
Presentations are commonly delivered to schools, workplaces, and community groups with the goal of increasing awareness and decreasing the stigma often associated with mental illness. Individuals who have a mental illness, and those who live, work, or otherwise support individuals with mental illness, become empowered. This informative presentation can be tailored to suit your group’s specific needs, and time frames.
Mental Health Works
This dynamic, full day workshop is offered to Managers, Supervisors, and Human Resource Representatives, and is specifically designed to help employers:
- Identify warning signs of mental illness
- Discuss mental illness with employees
- Assess risks
- Separate performance issues from mental health issues
- Make appropriate accommodations in the workplace
- Avoid Human Rights violations
Why is this so important? It is known that mental illness will impact 1 in 5 Canadians in their lifetime. When mental health issues are not addressed and treated appropriately, there can be considerable personal and financial costs to both individuals and organizations. Fortunately, with prevention, early treatment and support, many of these costs can be significantly reduced or eliminated entirely.
Workshops are offered in the Community at scheduled times throughout the year and on-site corporate training is also available.
Additional Information may be accessed by visiting www.mentalhealthworks.ca.
Suicide Awareness
Suicide may be prevented if we are able to identify and respond to the warning signs. Our standardized education package promotes a consistent knowledge base with respect to: suicide warning signs, assessment techniques, and community resources. The Suicide Awareness Education Package is appropriate for anyone who may come in contact with individuals at risk of suicide – at home, through their work, or in the general community.
Mental Health Promotion
There is no health without mental health! This half-day workshop explores five key characteristics of good mental health and assists individuals in identifying, and promoting, their own level of mental health fitness. Strategies for healthy living, stress management, communication, conflict resolution, and loss management are highlighted.
A one-hour presentation on Stress Management is also available.
Mental Illness Awareness: Partnership Speakers Bureau
This candid panel presentation features individuals living with a mental illness, and family members of individuals with mental illness, who share their powerful personal stories. The presentation is facilitated by our Mental Health Promotion Specialist who provides a general overview of mental illness, addresses common misconceptions, and encourages questions and dialogue between the panel and the participants.
